Delphi’s seven man Street Department crew, with assistance from seasonal summer workers, is kept busy year-round maintaining 17.9 miles of city streets. More than the usual paving and sidewalk replacement chores, under the direction of department head Aaron Lyons the crew handles snow removal, street sweeping, sign installation and maintenance, and weekly trash and yard waste pick up. The department also funds and oversees the acclaimed curbside and business recycling service, as well as maintaining the joint city/county recycling center near downtown Delphi. In September, 2006 Delphi and the Carroll County towns of Burlington and Flora were honored by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns for their cooperative effort in recycling with the Local Government Cooperation Award. The effort to develop the recycling program began in 1999 when a former Delphi street superintendent and the director of Northwest Indiana Solid Waste District approached each town council for support of a countywide recycling cooperative. That led to the Carroll County Recycling Cooperative which was funded with assistance from the Waste District and subscriptions for services from the three communities. The recycling effort continues and is invaluable in controlling the flow of waste to area landfills.
